Marie Hull’s desire was simply to create art and she never stopped experimenting, stating that, “One must keep experimenting, seeking and finding new ways of working in art….When art ceases to become vital and moving forward, expanding, then the artist begins to copy himself.”
Hull was influenced by numerous stylistic movements throughout her artistic career, including naturalism; the looser brushwork of impressionism, the vibrant colors of postimpressionism and Fauvism. Finally, in her later work, the intense colors and energetic brushwork of abstract expressionism. Rather than committing to a singular style, Hull used the artistic style that best suited the subject.
While this work by Marie Hull looks as though it was painted en plein aire (“in the open air”) while looking at the Spanish town of Granada, it was actually painted in the artist’s studio.
Advantages of En Plein Aire with Oil Paints
– You have your subject right in front of you
– It is easier to discern depth and proportions in life rather than from a photo
– Eyes are better than a camera. A camera (and then printing an image) distort colors
– You learn to paint faster to capture the weather and light effects on the subject
– Quick decision making allows for fewer chances to overwork the painting
Challenges of En Plein Aire with Oil Paints
– Painting outdoors requires packing and transporting all the necessary studio supplies to the desired location
– Paintings can take hours to complete and environmental conditions can change
– Oil paints take a significant amount of time to dry
– Painting surfaces have to be prepared ahead of time
