“Dancing with the Star and Crescent: Music and Dance of the Middle East,” Lloyd Miller and Katherine St. John

Music and dance is an important element of culture that is found in Islamic communities. Participants in this workshop will see demonstrations and learn about musical instruments from Turkey, Afghanistan, and Iran. Footwork patterns in Kurdish, Palestinian, and Arabic line dances will also be demonstrated and taught to participants in this exciting exploration of music and dance. Participants will also explore the importance of text, including Sufi poetry.
Katherine St. John and Lloyd Miller are both instructors at Eastern Arts, a local organization which strives to preserve and propagate authentic music and dance of Eastern cultures. Katherine St. John holds Master’s degrees in Persian and Folkdance and Dance Pedagogy. Dr. Lloyd Miller has studied Persian, Indian, and other ethnic music at Centre d’études de musique orientale in Paris and at Ravi Shankar’s Kinnara School. He plays over 100 instruments and directs many bands.
