Curating the Pre-Raphaelites: Past and Present

Alison Smith, Lead Curator of Nineteenth-Century British Art at London’s Tate Britain museum, will discuss the innovative reinstallation of the world’s premier collection of British Art.
Alison Smith is lead curator of 19th century British art at Tate Britain. Before joining Tate in 2000 she lectured in the history of art at Birmingham University and Sotheby’s Institute, London. She is author of The Victorian Nude: Sexuality, Morality and Art (Manchester 1996) and a number of other publications on aspects of 19th century British art and culture. At Tate Britain she is responsible for acquisitions, collections research, exhibitions and displays relating to the Victorian era. Recent exhibitions include Millais (2007) Watercolour (2011) and, most recently, Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde (2012). She is currently working on an exhibition on the relationship between art and the British empire titled Artist and Empire for November 2015.
