The Brigham Young University Museum of Art acknowledges with deep sorrow the loss of Lewis Burnham, a cherished friend, patron, and advocate whose generosity and commitment helped shape the museum and its mission for decades. Together with his beloved wife Gail, Lew was a steadfast supporter of the arts at BYU, contributing to several major exhibitions—including Sacred Gifts, a monumental religious exhibition on Carl Bloch and other European masters reflecting their deep interest in art and faith—and helping to acquire numerous paintings that enrich the permanent collection. Notable additions include Bruce Smith’s Bait (2011), Ron Richmond’s Exchange No. 8 and Triplus Number 3 (2005, 2007), Brian Kershisnik’s Sleeping Musicians and Cat Gift (2001), Royal Nebeker’s Prayer (2015), and most recently Emilia Wing’s Jerusalem (2025). Their support reflected a deep belief in the power of art to teach, inspire, and invite engagement with beauty, history, and faith.
Lew’s presence at the museum was as meaningful as his philanthropy. As director Dr. Janalee Emmer recalls, “Lew and Gail were regular visitors to the museum, and I always looked forward to seeing them and talking with them about exhibitions, art, and the many adventures they were having. They recently attended the opening of Earthbound and Heavenward, where they were able to meet an artist whose work entered the collection through their generous support. True to form, Lew also arrived with a box of plums for us to enjoy.” He will be remembered for his kindness, curiosity, and genuine interest in others, and he will be deeply missed—especially for his warm smile and faithful presence at museum events.
