NOVEMBER 14, 1998 -APRIL 7, 1999
This exhibition presents an “art history” of the American automobile, the nation’s most widely recognized example of industrial design. The exhibition includes about 20 outstanding American cars from throughout the century, exploring how their appearance has reflected changing artistic tastes and technological innovations, as well as social, cultural and economic influences. Many photographs and much other information about automobile design are also included. Visitors are invited to compare the design aspects of automobiles from various decades and to contemplate why the cars of today look the way they do.
