Timothy H. O’Sullivan (1842-1882), Sand Dunes, Carson Desert, Nevada, 1867, albumen print, 7 7/8″ x 10 5/8″, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

January 23 – May 26, 2014

Take a glimpse into the late-19th Century American West as captured by Timothy O’Sullivan, whose photographs are viewed today as some of the most compelling of their time. Taken as part of the King Survey expedition to gather practical and scientific information about the undeveloped American territory west of the Missouri River, these photographs played a crucial role in the way we think about landscape photography today, representing an ideal balance between fact and interpretation.

This exhibition has been organized by The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
