Coasting, Mahonri Young

Mahonri M. Young (1877-1957), Coasting, 1906, oil on canvas board, 13 3/4 x 20 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, purchase/gift of Mahonri M. Young Estate, 1959.

Mahonri Young enjoyed portraying action and is well known for creating compelling depictions of people at work. Here instead he offers the wonder of play, as a group of boys slides down a hill in their toboggan. The joy of a winter's day is captured, not in an image seemingly frozen in time, but a picture alive with energy and speed.
