Artwork of the Week: May 2018 (Week 22)

Thomas Doughty (1793-1856),View of the Susquehanna, 1830,oil on canvas, 18 1/8 x 24 inches, Brigham Young University Museum of Art, 1962.

This pastoral landscape painting of the Susquehanna River in upstate New York evokes the feeling of America as a new Eden, at a time when many American citizens found a national pride in the pristine landscape of their country. For members of the LDS church, this setting has additional interest, as significant events in early church history unfolded along the banks of the Susquehanna.
