Mahonri M. Young (1877-1957),

Davy Crockett Sketch, c.1940, ink, 9 9/16 x 6 9/16 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, purchase/gift of the Mahonri M. Young Estate, 1959.

Intrepid and legendary frontiersman Davy Crockett was born on this day in 1786. Though best known as the 'Man of the Wild Frontier,' he was also a Tennessee Legislator and served in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was killed at the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. This sketch by Mahonri M. Young depicts Crockett in the traditional 'Mountain Man' attire, complete with the traditional raccoon-tail hat that has become synonymous with Davy Crockett.
