Weir, Beached Boats

Julian Alden Weir (1852-1919), Beached Boats , no date, ink and wash, 5 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, purchase/gift of the Mahonri M. Young Estate, 1959.

Today’s Artwork of the Day is a small sketch by Julian Alden Weir of a nautical scene. This piece comes from the MOA’s extensive collection of sketches and drawings, many by Weir. This sketch of boats beached in harbor was perhaps a preparatory sketch for a larger work, or perhaps was simply a sketch of a moment in Weir’s travels.
