Rose Hartwell, After Frans Hals (Black)

Rose Hartwell (1861-1917),

After Frans Hals (Black), c.1900, oil on canvas, 9 7/8 x 7 13/16 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, 1941.

Dutch artist Frans Hals died on this day in 1666. Hals, a painter during the Dutch Golden Age, was best known for his wide repertoire of portraiture, including group portraiture. In today's Artwork of the Day, we see a piece by Utah artist Rose Hartwell wherein she has done a copy of one of Hals's portraits. Hartwell had a distinct interest in Dutch genre and portrait scenes.
