Mahonri M. Young (1877-1957),

Sabine Sketch After David, colored pencil, 8 7/16 x 10 15/16 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, purchase/gift of the Mahonri M. Young Estate, 1959.
French artist Jaques-Louis David was born on this day in 1748. A pioneer of the Neoclassical style, David's artworks are known for the rigidity of form, as well as the influence of ancient peoples in his subject matter. David painted before, during, and after the French Revolution, which is evident in the subject matter of his work. Ingres, the artist featured in yesterday's Artwork of the Day, was one of David's pupils.
