Dame Laura Knight,

The Diners, c.1930, crayon, 8 1/2 x 11 9 /16 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, purchase/gift of the Mahonri M. Young Estate.

Today's artwork of the day is a highlight from the BYU Museum of Art's British collection. This piece by Dame Laura Knight is a quaint and masterful crayon drawing capturing a moment of social niceties in the 1930s. The figures are dressed fashionably, dining at an upscale cafe, yet all seem to be completely wrapped up in their own thoughts rather an interacting with their dining partners.
