Dwight William Tryon (1849-1925), Moonrise Near the Shore, 1887, oil on canvas, 30 1/8 x 52 1/4 inches, Brigham Young University Museum of Art.
Today’s Artwork of the Day is a highlight of the American collection at the MOA and is currently on display in the exhibition Shaping America.
Tryon’s tonal painting likely renders his summer home in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Like other tonal painters of his day, he was inspired by the limited color range and undefined forms of the French Barbizon painters.
