David Lucas (1802-1881),

A Heath (After John Constable), 1830, engraving, 6 15/16 x 8 9/16 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, purchase/gift of the Mahonri M. Young Estate, 1959.

English painter John Constable was born on this day in 1776. His Romantic-era paintings often featured pastoral landscapes with distinct, recognizable clouds. As a young man, Constable took an early interest in sketching landscapes in his home county of Suffolk. This developed into a desire to pursue landscape painting as a career, which many family members and teachers discouraged. However, Constable persevered in his chosen course and found great success, particularly in France. Today's Artwork of the Day features a piece by David Lucas after one of Constable's seascapes.
