Claude Monet (1840-1926),

En Bateau (The Boat Ride), 19th century, graphite, 9 3/16 x 12 5/16 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, purchase/gift of the Mahonri M. Young Estate.
The French founder of the Impressionist movement, Claude Monet, was born on this day in 1840. His artworks are some of the most recognizable in Western art history, characterized by light colors, rapid brushstrokes built upon one another, and series of artworks of the same subject in different lighting.
