Chiura Obata (1885-1975), Iris, 1943, watercolor, 18 x 13 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art.

American artist Georgia O’Keeffe was born on this day in 1887. O’Keeffe is know for her large interpretations of various flowers, as well as landscapes and scenes in New Mexico. She is often called the “Mother of American Modernism.” Today’s painting of an iris reflects O’Keeffe’s large-scape flower paintings.
