Childe Hassam (1859-1935), Lighthouse, Montauk, 1920, watercolor, 8 1/16 x 10 11/16 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, purchase/gift of the Mahonri M. Young Estate, 1959.

 

Impressionist-era painter Childe Hassam was born on this day in 1859. As an American Impressionist painter, Hassam was instrumental in helping the movement gain ground in the United States.
