Powers 'Ideal Christ' Sculpture Now On View

A remarkable marble portrait of Christ by one of the most prominent sculptors of the nineteenth century is now on display at the BYU Museum of Art. The bust by celebrated American sculptor Hiram Powers (1805 - 1873) has been loaned to the MOA from a private collection. The portrait,

The Ideal Christ, is one of three versions of the sculpture that the artist created and the only known to remain. Powers created the series during the last decade of his life, completing this version in 1871, just two years before his passing.
