Maynard Dixon, Farewell

Maynard Dixon, Farewell (Last Chance), 1912, Oil on board, Gift of A. Merlin Steed and Alice W. Steed Collection

This painting is an example of Dixon’s early work as an illustrator for Sunset Magazine. Produced for the novel ‘Long Chance‘ by Peter Kyne, this scene depicts an interaction between the widowed Donna Corblay and her new love interest Bob McGraw. On the back of the panel, Dixon hand-wrote a quote from the book, “You’re a fighter Bob. Don’t let your love for me weaken your defenses.”
