Conrad Buff (1886-1975), Desert Clouds, c.1960, oil on board, 24 13/16 x 36 7/8 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art.
Influenced by the California Impressionists of the early twentieth century, and by the western landscapes of Maynard Dixon, Conrad Buff produced many colorful paintings inspired by the beauty of the natural, untouched landscape of the American West. Composed with heavy repeating brushstrokes of intense color, this painting documents Buff’s enthusiastic experience of the land as he attempted to quickly record the vibrant hues that danced before him in the stunning summer sunset. On August 31, is Conrad Buff’s birthday. This painting is currently on exhibition in Becoming America at the BYU Museum of Art.
