Dwight William Tryon (1849-1925), Moonrise near the Shore, 1887, oil on canvas, 30 1/8 x 52 ¼ inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, 1973.
This poetic scene was inspired by the artist's summer residence in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The subtle color and lack of contrast between light and dark not only relate to the tonalist style for which Tyron is best known, but they also express the stillness and quiet beauty of this transition from day to night.
