D. Elden Beck,

Landscape in Colorado, 1945, watercolor, 9 x 11 15/16 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art.

On this day in 1876, Colorado was admitted to the Union, thereby becoming the 38th state. This artwork from the MOA Collection showcases the vivid scenery of Colorado Rocky Mountains. The artist, D. Elden Beck, was a zoologist and entomologist who worked for many years at BYU. Beck was persuaded by his wife (who was also an artist) to try landscape painting as a hobby, which he continued throughout his life.
