July 1 is Canada Day, the commemoration of the joining together of the British colonies Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into one federation in 1876. The day was first officially called 'Canada Day' in 1982, though many were calling it that informally before then. Celebrations often include fireworks or bonfires, parties, barbecues, concerts, and other community events.
