In MOA Artwork of the Week

Mahonri M. Young (1877-1957), Chess Match, c.1935, graphite, 5 15/16 x 8 15/16 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, purchase/gift of the Mahonri M. Young Estate, 1959.

Marcel Duchamp, born on this day in 1877, is perhaps best known for his inflammatory work, Fountain, of the Dada movement or the Modernist Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2. Less well-known is Duchamp’s love for the game of chess. In the early 1920s, Duchamp began a serious study of chess and devoted the rest of his life to it, producing very few artworks after this time.
