Max Thalmann (1890-1944), The Last Supper, c.1920, woodcut. Brigham Young University Museum of Art,

gift

of Milton D. Heifetz.

Today's Artwork of the Day is a beautiful woodcut print by German artist Man Thalmann, featured in the museum's religious collection. In this image, Christ sits with his twelve disciples, the glorious light radiating from His serene being infusing the scene with a supernal energy. Drawing upon the German woodcut tradition, Thalmann's works exude the dramatic lines and bold, expressive geometry prevalent in graphic arts of his time.
