Julian Alden Weir (1852-1919),

Exterior Stairs, no date, oil on canvas, 17 1/8 x 12 1/4 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, purchase/gift of the Mahonri M. Young Estate, 1959.

Dutch artist M. C. Escher was born on this day in 1898. Escher is best known for his tessellations, staircases to nowhere, and playful explorations of perspective. The BYU Museum of Art will open an exhibition of Escher's work on November 17, 2017. Today's Artwork of the Day is an homage to Escher's famous staircase pieces. This painting by Julian Alden Weir depicts a staircase outside a residence, perhaps even Weir's own home.
