Man vs. Rock

Dixon Symposium Rapid Recap 4

John Ott Speaking at the Maynard Dixon Symposium

By MOA Student Marketing Assistant Colette Radstone

Last night, as snow flurries danced outside the Museum’s windows, symposium guests enjoyed dinner while listening to our keynote speaker John Ott, of James Madison University, and his presentation, “Man vs. Rock: Labor, Race and Maynard Dixon’s Boulder Dam Suite.” Ott spoke of Dixon’s unique artistic vision in portraying the legacy of the Boulder Dam, also known as the Hoover Dam. Ott brought insight into Dixon’s showcase of the Dam’s grandeur while shedding light on the harsh working conditions that the embankment created. By exploring this historical undertaking through the lens of Dixon’s art, Ott expressed a poignant perspective on the human experience.
