George Inness (1825-1894),

Apple Trees, Milton, N.Y., c.1881, oil on canvas, 20 1/8 x 30 1/4 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, gift of Joseph R. Armstrong and Duane E. Davis, 1973.

American artist George Inness was born on this day in 1825. During his lifetime, Inness was considered one of the greatest American artists of all time and father of American landscape painting. In his work, he was thought to have tried to marry the traditional representation art that he studied at the National Academy of Design and the more expressive style of the Hudson River School.
