Today is the day whereon most East Asian countries celebrate the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, later the Gautama Buddha, or Buddha. He was born around 563 BC in the area of modern-day Nepal. Raised as a royal prince, Buddha first learned of the world outside the palace as a young man. Following several experiences that changed his outlook on life, he renounced his royal title and began his spiritual journey. Celebrations of his birth vary around the world, but often include processions, worship, and bringing offerings to temples.
