MOA Spring 2019 Preview

It's almost Spring term and there is a lot happening at the MOA! We're excited to open two new exhibitions during Spring term, both showcasing the MOA's beautiful collection of American art. The MOA will also host many events, including the annual Family Arts Festival on June 14.

In the Arena: The Art of Mahonri Young opens at the MOA on May 17 and is a celebration of one Utah-born artist upon whom the MOA collection was built. Mahonri Young, a grandson of Brigham Young, was a famed artist who garnered particular attention for his sculpture. This exhibition is comprised of sculpture, etchings, drawings, oil paintings, and watercolors. MOA curator Ashlee Whitaker said, 'There really is something for everyone in this exhibition—there will be a work that draws you in and becomes a favorite. I think people will come away with an endearing love for Mahonri Young and recognize him as one of the great artists from the state of Utah.'

Becoming America, opening May 31, is a new semi-permanent exhibition on view for three years. This exhibition follows in the tradition set by the MOA's recent semi-permanent American exhibitions (Shaping America, American Dreams) by showcasing works by renowned American artists including Maynard Dixon, Minerva Teichert, Norman Rockwell, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and others. Becoming America will also bring works to light which have not been previously displayed. Kenneth Hartvigsen, Curator of American Art at the MOA said, 'My hope for visitors is that they will feel that there is great power in recognizing that we as individuals, and we as a nation, are never stuck or frozen in place. We are always full of potential, always becoming.'
