E. G. Nicholas Galanin: We Will Again Open This Container of Wisdom That Has Been Left in Our Care

May 11, 2015
In the video series Tsu Heidei Shugaxtutaan (pronounced soo HAYdee shoe GAK tu tahn), performers dance to seemingly unlikely soundtracks, juxtaposed on the wall in black and white in balanced beats. One hears the video before actually seeing it, and the artist delights in the surprise of visitors as they encounter the paradox of performance and sound.

E. G. Courtney Kessel: You and Me

February 02, 2015
Through sculpture, performance, and video, Courtney Kessel strives to make visible the quiet, understated, and often unseen love and labor of motherhood. Her video performances are repetitive, performative, and mundane; but the seemingly endless, sometimes awkward efforts accrue deeper meaning through the accumulation of these nuanced actions. Her work manifests as a form of umbilical cord between mother and child that expresses their intimate connectedness despite physical separation.

E. G. Amar Kanwar: A Season Outside

September 02, 2014
A Season Outside is a work by Indian born artist Amar Kanwar that reveals the tension surrounding the militarized border between India and Pakistan. The work is an abstract digital video projection of the sunset ritual of closing the gate on the border at Wagah-Atari juxtaposed with images of enforced division, theatrical military posturing, and real violence in the region. These images are accompanied by a voiceover offered by the artist, a narrative of what has occurred in his own family and a suggestion of how deeply this aggression has affected the cultures and individuals involved.
