James C. Christensen was a celebrated American artist and illustrator. A BYU alum and former faculty member, he drew inspiration for his whimsical style from fairytales, legends, as well as his Christian beliefs. He included characters like trolls, mermaids, and angels in his imaginative and often amusing paintings. In this work, Christensen presents a round, voluminous musician, dressed in colorful layers of clothing, which contrast with the spindle-like forms of his fingers, instruments, and music stands. The musician balances precariously on a small stool as he performs a two-part piece. The wit and humor of his impossible task prompt deeper reflection on less whimsical human dilemmas: How can one person be expected to play two parts at once?
