Love
McRay Magleby, 'Love', 1986, lithograph, 30 3/8 x 21 ¼ inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, 2016.

In honor of Valentine's Day!

McRay Magleby is best known for his cleverly devised posters and produced many noteworthy designs throughout his career as a graphic designer, artist, and professor. He had the honor of creating the first Cultural Olympiad poster for the 2002 Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City and designed multiple U.S. postage stamps. During his 26 years as Creative Director at Brigham Young University, Magleby produced many posters such as this that hung around the campus.

The figure in Magleby’s LOVE exemplifies the state of being head over heels, totally smitten, and blushingly in love. Simple circles create a snow-kissed background. Sleek lines show carefully combed hair and a dapper suit. With an ombre of deep reds and pinks and a triangular face softened to a warm heart, this figure is undoubtedly deep in a Shakespeare-worthy love.
