Snow in Streets
Julian Joseph (1882-1964),'Snow in Streets', 1936, oil on canvas, 71.4 x 89.2 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, gift of George R. Nicholson.

Rather than focus on glittery winter trees, or the warm glow emanating from a snow-covered home (both of which appear in this painting), Julian Joseph emphasizes a buried street, no doubt an impressionistic influence. The road, hidden under a largely-untouched thick layer of snow, discourages travel for the time being. Perhaps if one braves the cold and hikes in snowshoes, or when the warm sun has melted some of the cover, the curious explorer might venture down the path toward the hills. Julian Joseph invites the viewer into the scene with strong perspectival lines, and tree branches that hug the titular street.
