A simple scene of a chilly morning, covered by a fresh layer of snow and lit by a pale sunrise; this watercolor by Dutch artist Francois Pieter Meulen evokes the words of Jesus Christ, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11).
This image can also remind us of the sacred birth of Christ. Shepherds were among the first to worship Christ in His mortal body. An angel came to these shepherds saying, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” (Luke 2: 11-14)
