Winter Trees was painted by the watercolorist and educator Edward Maryon who taught art at the University of Utah for over 30 years. Maryon depicts a quaint red barn tucked behind a stand of trees during wintertime. The barn has almost become part of the natural landscape itself, as Maryon utilizes similar shades of red and brown in both the foreground and right side of the composition. The blues of the frozen creek in the foreground and sky tie the structure of the composition together while also highlighting the frigid temperature of this rural enclave. Maryon masterfully balances the warmth of the barn and vegetation with the cool colors of winter.
