'The Calf' by Edwin Evans

Artwork of the Week: July 29, 2024

A painting of two young children feed a white calf against a pastoral background
Edwin Evans (1860-1946), 'The Calf,' 1899, oil on canvas, 28 x 34 1/8 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, gift of Maria Winder, 1928.

In this charming depiction of pastoral life, two young boys crouch down to feed a white calf. The serenity of this Utah farmyard scene is warmed by the effects of bright summer sunlight and dappled shade, painted in subtly broken brushstrokes. In idealized renderings of cows and farmyards like this one, Edwin Evans omits rusty farm implements, dilapidated buildings, and unkempt grounds that form part of actual rural landscapes. Evans employed techniques from his studies in France as a Paris Art Missionary to create this light-filled, impressionist canvas.

Artwork of the Week: 'An Autumn Stroll' By J. Alden Weir

May 11, 2026
In J. Alden Weir’s An Autumn Stroll, a woman and child share a quiet moment in the cool autumn light. As they pause for a shared moment under a tree, they gaze outward—their calm, contemplative expressions detailing their experience and allowing viewers to feel welcome in theirspace. Based on Weir’s own daughter Dorothy and her stepmother, the artist uses this painting toprovide viewers a glimpse into the relationship between this mother and child, capturing both familiarity and tenderness. As they stand together, connected, they represent the relationships that many may have with their own parents or loved ones.
