'Young Immortals Planting Trees' by Brian Kershisnik

Artwork of the Week: October 7

A painting of three people planting trees in the company of a dog
Brian Kershisnik, ‘Young Immortals Planting Trees,’ oil on canvas, 2019. 36 x 54 inches. On loan at the Museum in the exhibition 'The Difficult Part.'

For decades, Kershisnik has explored the connections between the mundane mortal existence and the holiness of immortality. This painting explores the ideas of young immortals needing to learn and practice new skills. Here, a woman instructs two young immortal boys in planting saplings, a beautiful suggestion that care for the natural world is a holy endeavor here and beyond. Originally inspired by his own children planting trees, Kershisnik feels that planting trees is akin to creating a new world to benefit those in the future.
