L’AFFICHOMANIA: THE PASSION FOR FRENCH POSTERS
SEPTEMBER 3, 2021 – FEBRUARY 19, 2022
BIENVENUE À LA BELLE ÉPOQUE!
Be transported to the bright, bold, boulevards of 19th century Paris and witness the color revolution for yourself in L’Affichomania: The Passion for French Posters. This vibrant collection of lithographic posters and ephemera by masters of the craft Jules Chéret, Eugène Grasset, Alphonse Mucha, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec will make it hard to believe that you’re still in Provo!
L’Affichomania celebrates the poster’s brilliant fusion of art and commerce in fin-de-siècle French society and its effects on Parisian street life, the rise of advertising, the entertainment district of Montmartre, and the changing representations of women.
We invite you to enter the world of L’Affichomania through our replica of a Parisian metro station, to immerse yourself in the Paris of yesterday with our exhibition audio guide, available exclusively on the BYU Museum of Art app, and to celebrate a simpler time at our Art After Dark event on September 17. You’ll have so much fun in Paris that you may never want to leave!
This exhibition was organized by The Richard H. Driehaus Museum and is toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.
