The Life of Christ in Prints

For most of Christian history, printmaking helped make the stories of Christ visible and accessible to those who could not see original paintings and sculptures for themselves. But printmaking does more than depict Christ's life—it embodies it. The process of pressing an image into visibility on paper recalls the Incarnation, when the invisible God became visible man, and the cutting and carving required to create a print echoes Christ's suffering during the Crucifixion.
This exhibition brings together historical and contemporary relief and intaglio prints. Though these works vary widely in style and technique, together they reveal how printmaking is not only a means of representing Christ, but also a powerful medium for contemplating his life, death, and Resurrection.
