'Sacred Grove' by Bent Franklin Larsen

Artwork of the Week: May 5

'Sacred Grove' by Bent Franklin Larsen
Bent Franklin Larsen (1882-1970), 'Sacred Grove,' 1912, oil on canvas, 27 5/8 x 39 1/2 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, gift of the artist, 1912. This work is featured in the exhibition ‘From the Vault.’

Most depictions of the Sacred Grove include Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appearing to fourteen-year-old Joseph Smith in a pillar of light. However, in this rendition of the subject, the figures are noticeably absent. Instead, B.F. Larsen presents a forest of trees with an illuminated clearing in the center. In visualizing an open landscape, Larsen allows viewers to imagine themselves in the sacred space, inviting personal revelation and an encounter with the divine.

Larsen was a head of the BYU Art Department from 1931 to 1953.
