Artwork of the Week: May 19

Washday on the Plains by Minerva Teichert
Minerva Teichert (1888-1976), 'Washday on the Plains,' 1938, oil on canvas, 42 x 94 1/2 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, gift of the Teichert Family Collection. This work is featured in the exhibition ‘From the Vault.’

Beloved for her depictions from the Book of Mormon and the American West, Minerva Teichert emphasizes women’s resilience in Washday on the Plains. While washing laundry is not typically considered a glamorous task, Teichert places this mundane chore at the center of the painting. In doing so, Teichert affirms the dignity of the task, empowering the pioneer women and conveying the importance of their work.
