The Museum of Art will be closed Monday to honor Juneteenth. If learning and viewing art is one way you would like to celebrate this Juneteenth, we still have you covered! Today, we want to acknowledge artist, activist, and advocate of the promised land, Romare Bearden, whose work was the subject of a MOA exhibition earlier this year. Some of his work can still be seen on our website here. Bearden was “a participant in key episodes of the African-American experience, including the Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance, the Great Depression, World War II, and the Civil Rights Movement” which “forged an artistic style and a voice for change unlike any other”.
Change was and is needed. Without change, we wouldn’t be where we are now, and we wouldn’t be able to continue growing. Bearden inspired and elicited change through his unique art techniques.
